What's Better Than Calories In / Calories Out?

By   |   Expert Author Joan Kent

I'm tempted to say, "Almost anything," because the calorie myth is being disproven over and over these days. Finally!
That myth is a distraction from the real effects of foods. Below are just a few.
1. Food and Brain Chemistry
No, there's no brain chemistry in food. But certain properties of foods help the brain produce certain brain chemicals.
Protein foods supply amino acids.
As you remember from 7th grade biology (!!?!?), amino acids are the "building blocks of protein." Aminos are used by the brain to make brain chemicals that influence our moods.
Three of them are dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. Protein also provides B vitamins to help the brain make those 3 chemicals.
Dopamine is associated with pleasure and reward. It triggers alertness, clarity and faster response time. A brain on dopamine is ready for action.
Norepinephrine is another reward chemical that triggers alertness. It's anti-depressive and has analgesic properties.
Serotonin makes us feel relaxed and calm. It decreases stress, anxiety and depression. It's also an analgesic. With food, serotonin produces satiety, especially for carbs.
To take advantage of the natural properties of protein foods, eat fish, shrimp, crab, poultry, eggs, beef, cottage cheese, high-protein yogurt.
But I'm Vegan!
Use the many plant protein powders available. Hemp, pea, brown rice, sacha inchi, and vegetable protein powders effectively replace animal proteins. Vegan or not, never skimp on protein if you want your brain to function optimally.
2. Food and Hormones
We're NOT talking about hormones given to animals that can harm the health of those who eat the foods. This section is about the hormones our bodies produce when we eat specific foods.
Here are 3 examples of how hormones triggered by foods can affect us.
CCK
When we eat fats and/or protein foods, the body releases CCK (cholecystokinin).
CCK is almost magic. It makes us feel we've had enough food and don't need more for a while. It decreases appetite for carbohydrates and also stops carb cravings.
Insulin
When we eat starches ("carbs"), the pancreas releases insulin. Insulin is absolutely vital, but in excess can cause trouble. What can excess insulin do?
• It promotes fat storage, moving glucose into fat stores.
• It inhibits fat utilization (oxidation), so we burn carbohydrate for fuel instead.
• It promotes inflammation and is at the heart (!) of a number of metabolic conditions that increase the risk of heart disease.
Glucagon
When we eat protein, the body releases glucagon. Glucagon moves fat from storage into the bloodstream, so it can be used for energy.
Those are only 3 of the hormones that respond to specific foods we eat. As you can see, they have benefits that make them more compelling than calories in / calories out.
3. Food and Sleep
Serotonin is a neurotransmitter and sometimes classified as a hormone. It's produced in the brain and the intestines and is found in platelets and other locations. It's a vasoconstrictor.
Serotonin is best known as an antidepressant but does a lot more.
In the GI tract, it helps to control appetite, especially for carbs.
When we're injured, serotonin is released by the platelets. It triggers vasoconstriction to decrease blood flow and promotes blood clot formation.
What If We Don't Have Enough?
Low serotonin is linked with anxiety, low self-esteem, cravings for sweet and/or starchy carbs, and sleep difficulties.
If you have trouble falling asleep at night, try eating a small portion of healthful starch about 80 or 90 minutes before bed. The starch will start the process that allows the brain to produce serotonin. Serotonin in turn produces melatonin, often called the sleep hormone. All natural, no side effects.
If your sleep problem is waking up in the middle of the night and not getting back to sleep, starches will help you fall asleep again.
Keep your portions small. The idea is to change brain chem, not add another meal.
ALSO! This works best if you eat protein with your meals and snacks throughout the day.
As you can see, food is much more (and more interesting!) than calories in / calories out.

Discover How You Can Overcome Sugar Cravings And Addictions!

By       Expert Author Natalie Leavenworth

Lose Weight Without Breaking a Sweat!
These are some of the indications you can look for to determine if you have a sugar problem:
* An inability to go without sugar for more than a day
* Pastries, candies and other sweets are very appealing to you even when you're not hungry
* Mood swings affected by your sugar intake, whether too high or too low
* Irregular eating habits
There are wide-ranging ways in which a sugar addiction can impact your life, many of which aren't easily visible. Sugar affects not only your energy level, but your mood as well, influencing your ability to focus, your self-esteem and your relationships with others.
These tips should help you stop not only sugar cravings, but addiction as well:
How to Stop Sugar Cravings Tip # 1 Toss temptation
Sweets lurking in your pantry are just temptations waiting to betray you - get rid of them! It's easier to give in to your cravings Think about it - how willing would you be, when dealing with a sugar craving, to walk or drive to a store to buy a sweet to snack on?
How to Stop Sugar Cravings Tip # 2 Switch from Sugar to Whole Grains
It's often overlooked that sugary sweets and beverages aren't the only sources of sugar. When we eat whole grains, the body processes them into their components, which include naturally-occurring sugar. Experiment with whole-grain foods like bread, cereals and pasta. Before long, you'll like them as much as you currently enjoy their processed counterparts, and they're much more healthy for you!
How to Stop Sugar Cravings Tip # 3 Many foods are available with no added sugar or sugar-free - buy them!
Cutting sugar out of your diet immediately might be too difficult to accomplish. In that case, look for "no sugar added" and "sugar-free" alternatives to your favorite foods. There are other alternatives available, such as artificial sweeteners like Equal, Splenda and Nutri-sweet. While it's true that these products don't offer any nutritional advantage over processed sugar, they'll help satisfy cravings and reduce your dependence on sugar.
How to Stop Sugar Cravings Tip #4 Increase your daily water intake
One of the characteristics of people with sugar problems is that they don't drink enough water. You need to drink at least three glasses of water daily.
How to Stop Sugar Cravings Tip # 5 Get plenty of exercise!
Exercising is an excellent element of any weight-loss program. It's easy to adopt a simple routine to workout your body's various muscle groups. Paradoxically, once you get into an exercise routine, it'll actually be easier to resist temptations like sugar cravings. Exercise will help you reduce the level of stress and tension in your life, and may also help you to overcome the urge to eat whenever you're bored.
How to Stop Sugar Cravings Tip # 6 Don't give up the war if you lose a battle
It's not uncommon to have a hard time giving up anything you like, no matter how much you're aware that it's not good for you. Feeling guilty over having a sweet snack, especially if you've succumbed near the end of an otherwise successful day, is counterproductive. Try to keep in mind to take your sugar-beating program going one day at a time - if you stumble today, you can try again tomorrow!
Gaining control over sugar cravings and addiction is tough. You don't need to eliminate sugar from your diet - that's pretty much impossible anyway - but you have to control your intake and keep track of how your disposition is affected by sugar. After a while, you'll also notice that some things seem to spark a sugar craving. You may find that some events will induce boredom, depression or stress, and then a sugar craving will start. You can look for better ways of dealing with these emotions than eating sweets, and you can also try to reduce how often these emotions occur in your life.

Nutrition and Addiction

By

We are aware that sometimes clients enter an addiction treatment program with physical problems that were caused either directly or indirectly by substance abuse addiction. Indirect causes of health concerns can include nutrition issues.
Clients who are battling drug addiction may have developed poor eating habits as a result of their addiction. Unhealthy foods may make up a large part of the clients' diets, or some clients may have been going for extended periods of time without eating anything at all.
For example, certain drugs are known to stimulate the appetite; however, food cravings resulting from the use of those drugs tend to gravitate towards either sweet foods or very salty foods. On the other hand, other drugs can work as appetite suppressants. The person either has no desire to eat, or the drug has interfered with the part of the brain that sends out signals of hunger pangs, weakness, or other signs that the body needs nourishment. When this occurs, days can pass without any food being consumed.
If nutrition problems are evident upon entering an addiction treatment program, steps will be taken during the treatment to correct them. Clients should be given means that are low in carbohydrates but high in protein while participating in the holistic recovery program.
Ideally meals are prepared on-site by qualified and trained chefs. This serves several purposes, such as allowing for social interaction among clients if they are at a stage in the recovery program where they can do so, and teaching clients how to change their nutrition habits.
A holistic treatment program addresses all aspects of a person-body, mind, and spirit. If one of these, such as the body or physical aspect, is not working at an optimum level, then none of them are. This is why proper nutrition is so important during a holistic recovery program.
G&G Holistic Drug Rehab offers a unique and innovative residential inpatient treatment program for individuals suffering from addiction. A 24 hour toll free addiction helpline is always available at 800-559-9503 for more information or visit http://www.holisticdrugrehab.com.

Nutritional Supplements Are Important For Optimal Health

By      Expert Author Joanne Jackson

It's estimated we are receiving only 40 percent of the nutritional value of food nowadays. Some reports suggest this is untrue while many reports go even farther by saying this figure is actually lower. In any case, unless you are fortunate enough to have a garden close by with organic fresh food you can harvest and eat on a daily basis, I believe the food available in the supermarket does indeed lack in nutrition.
Many fresh foods travel great distances and many foods are processed to increase shelf life. To obtain the highest possible yield, producers are forced to rely on chemical fertilizers and pesticides for their crops, while other producers use growth hormones, antibiotics, and inhumane confinement for animal production. (By the way, from what I understand about antibiotics given to animals destined for the dinner table...they are not necessary if the animals are kept in clean, un-crowded environments where they are able to stretch their legs and get fresh air and sunshine daily. Another reason to shop organic.)
The availability of high-calorie, high-fat, high-sugar, and low-fibre foods has rapidly become commonplace, and growing concern with processed foods is they are becoming much less expensive than nutrient-dense foods such as fruits and vegetables. The availability and lower price of processed and energy-dense foods rich in sugar and fat makes them appealing to the pocket book as well as the taste buds, but not without consequences. Obesity, heart disease, arthritis, diabetes and other chronic conditions are gaining a stronghold in North America and researchers are now beginning to admit that diet plays a huge role in the prevention and treatment of disease.
Balance, variety, and moderation are the keys to a healthful diet. A balanced proportion of foods from the different food groups, a variety of foods from within the different food groups, and moderation in the consumption of any food should provide us with the nutrients we need to sustain life.
Although developments in the food industry over time have improved food quality and safety, there are still concerns over the nutritional content the food actually contains. Nutrients should come primarily from the foods we eat, but it's becoming increasingly difficult to find foods that have not been grown in nutritionally challenged soils. Decades of poor agricultural practices are depleting foods of the nutrients we need for optimal health and wellness.
This is why nutritional supplements are important.
Nutritional supplements are designed to provide nutrients, both essential and non-essential, that you may not be getting from your diet. Also known as dietary supplements, nutritional supplements are an important part of a balanced health regime and can offer significant health benefits. They can help to correct nutritional deficiencies and help boost the immune system, and there is growing scientific evidence supporting the benefits of nutritional supplements and their role in maintaining optimal health.
Nutritional and dietary supplements are big business. It's estimated that over twenty-five billions dollars a year is spent in the United States alone on natural health products. So which supplements should you look for and which are safe to take?
In the United States, the FDA regulates dietary supplements. According to their website, "dietary supplements (are regulated) under a different set of regulations than those covering "conventional" foods and drug products (prescription and Over-the-Counter). Under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA), the dietary supplement manufacturer is responsible for ensuring that a dietary supplement is safe before it is marketed. FDA is responsible for taking action against any unsafe dietary supplement product after it reaches the market. Generally, manufacturers do not need to register their products with FDA nor get FDA approval before producing or selling dietary supplements. * Manufacturers must make sure that product label information is truthful and not misleading. *Domestic and foreign facilities that manufacture/process, pack, or hold food for human or animal consumption in the United States are required to register their facility with the FDA."
Although "the manufacturer is responsible for ensuring that its dietary supplement products are safe before they are marketed" and "there are no provisions in the law for FDA to "approve" dietary supplements for safety or effectiveness before they reach the consumer", it's important to purchase nutritional supplements from a reputable company who has been in busy for many years. You can also read more on FDA regulations with regards to dietary supplements on the FDA website.
In Canada, the laws are much more stringent. On January 1, 2004 The Natural Health Products Regulations came into effect and apply to all natural health products. Products defined in the Regulations as natural health products include vitamins, minerals, herbal remedies, probiotics, homeopathic medicines, traditional medicines (such as Traditional Chinese Medicines), amino acids and essential fatty acids.
Natural health products that fall under these regulations require an NPN (Natural Product Number). Once Health Canada has assessed the product, an eight digit product license number, preceded by the letters "NPN" will appear on the label informing consumers that Health Canada has reviewed the product for safety, quality, and health claims, and the product has been approved to be marketed under the Natural Health Products Regulations and has authorized the product for sale in Canada. The Natural Health Product Directorate (NHPD) is the regulating authority for health products for sale in Canada.
Nutritional supplements that are considered food products or whole-food concentrates come under the regulations of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and do not require NPNs. When purchasing nutritional supplements look for a Natural Product Number (NPN) on the label to ensure the product has met the requirements of Health Canada, and also make sure the company selling the product is a reputable company with a good track record.
Including nutritional supplements in your diet and daily health regime doesn't need to be hard or cost a lot of money. Many companies offer high quality supplements at reasonable prices and it only takes a few minutes to mix up a healthy "green drink" from a barley grass juice concentrate such as AIM BarleyLife® or include a supplement caplet such as Kyolic® Aged Garlic Extract™ with your meal.
There are many health benefits nutritional supplements have to offer. In these modern times, with the convenience, cost and available of fast and processed foods, poor dietary habits and the questionable nutrition content of nutrient-dense foods, nutritional supplements are becoming increasingly popular as an addition to complement the diet. Simply put, nutritional supplements are important for optimal health.
AIM provides a variety of superior whole food concentrates and nutritional supplements to support a healthy lifestyle, strengthen the immune system, and nourish your cells, and AIM Members enjoy the benefits of wholesale pricing.
As Members of AIM Canada, we have a dedicated team of knowledgeable people keeping on top of all the legislation and regulations, ensuring AIM Canada is compliant, so we will continue to have the right to use and share natural health products to protect our health and the health of others who wish to use Natural Health Products.
To date AIM Canada has acquired eleven NPNs with nine other AIM products in the licensing process. Food products such as AIM BarleyLife®, LeafGreens®, Just Carrots®, ProPeas™ and RediBeets® come under the regulations of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and do not require NPNs.

Health and Nutrition

By

What are nutrients?
Every molecule in the body is created by Nutrients & there are more than 45 nutrients. These nutrients build molecules, cells, and tissues of the body.We get energy from Carbohydrates, proteins, and fats that we eat.
These are called macronutrients. These macro nutrients are broken down / metabolized to give energy to the body.
Vitamins and minerals (called micronutrients) are not themselves metabolized for energy, but they are important in helping the macronutrients convert to energy.
What is a healthy diet?
The optimal diet has to be individualized to meet your unique needs. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) food pyramid suggests that we use fat "sparingly," and that our daily diet include 2 - 3 servings of dairy products; 2 - 3 servings of meat, poultry, fish, eggs, beans, or nuts; 3 - 5 servings of vegetables; 2 - 4 servings of fruit; and 6 - 11 servings of bread, cereal, rice, or pasta.
These are general guidelines. Healthy diet is dependent upon many factors like: age, gender, body size, pregnancy, and status of health. A clinical nutritionist or nutritionally oriented doctor can help you determine what type of diet is best for you.
While you know it is important to eat a healthy diet, it isn't always easy to sort through all of the information available about nutrition and food choices.
Nutrition has a vital importance to human well-being. Nutrition should play a leading role to improve our quality of life. Nutrition is a key for reducing your body fat percentage.
Better nutrition means stronger immune systems, less illness and better health. Better nutrition is a prime entry point to ending poverty and a milestone to achieving better quality of life. Safe food and good nutrition are important to all.
Basic nutrition knowledge is constantly taking shape every day, producing new diet trends to an ever growing audience of people who want to know the latest and greatest ways to achieve their physical fitness goals.
Get nutrition facts and discover how you can use dietary recommendations to improve your health. As you grow older, getting a nutritionally rich diet becomes even more important. The link between nutrition and health is necessary to achieve optimal health.
Good nutrition is a clear path to optimize our quality of life. An important starting point for achieving optimum health is to achieve optimum nutrition and get the proper nutrients from the food.
Diet and nutrition are the principle preventive measures against diseases.
Reading labels and eating a diet rich in vitamins and nutrients is optimal for healthy nutrition. Research confirms that good nutrition in the early years of life is crucial for human growth and mental development.
The study of human nutrition dates back to the 18th century, when the French chemist Lavoisier discovered that there was a relationship between our metabolism of food and the process of breathing.
The field of clinical nutrition has evolved into a practice that is increasingly incorporated into mainstream medical treatment. The term "nutritional supplement" refers to vitamins, minerals, and other food components that are used to support good health and treat illness.
A clinical nutritionist or nutritionally oriented doctor can help you determine what type of diet is best for you.
During the initial part of the visit, the clinical nutritionist will ask you questions about your medical history, family history, and personal lifestyle.
In hospitals, nutrition is used to improve the overall health of patients with a wide range of conditions. Effects of exercise and nutrition on postural balance and risk of falling in elderly people with decreased bone mineral density: randomized controlled trial pilot study.
Healthy Lifestyle
Healthy people are stronger, are more productive and more able to create opportunities to gradually break the cycles of both poverty and hunger in a sustainable way.
Healthy eating is associated with reduced risk for many diseases, including the three leading causes of death: heart disease, cancer, and stroke. Healthy eating is fundamental to good health and is a key element in healthy human development, from the prenatal and early childhood years to later life stages.
Healthy eating is equally important in reducing the risk of many chronic diseases. We spend a lot of money on food, but there are ways to cut costs and still serve healthy delicious meals.
When you choose healthy foods instead of sugary or high-fat foods you can actually improve your health by adding extra phytochemicals and fiber. Breakfast foods should be healthy but they have a tendency to be high in fats and sugar.
We always hear that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so why ruin a healthy breakfast.
Good nutrition is vital to good health, disease prevention, and essential for healthy growth and development of children and adolescents. Fiber is an important part of a healthy diet.
Many of us work very hard to eat healthy meals, but struggle with the urge for candy, cookies, cakes, ice cream and anything else full of sugar and sweetness. Most experts agree that snacking is a part of a balanced and healthy diet, as long as the snacks don't pile on empty calories.
When your best efforts go awry, and you order pizza or serve another meal that doesn't exactly fit into a healthy diet, you still have many options for making it healthier. Just about everyone knows that fruits and vegetables are a very important part of a healthy diet.
Having a well-stocked pantry and refrigerator can be a busy cook's best weapon in the war against resorting to fast-food, high-fat, unhealthy meals. Fresh oil is a source of essential fatty acids, which help keep the skin healthy and the hair shiny.
We believe eating sensibly, combined with appropriate exercise, is the best solution for a healthy lifestyle.
Foods
When you choose healthy foods instead of sugary or high-fat foods you can actually improve your health by adding extra phytochemicals and fiber. The goal is to balance negative foods with positive foods so that the combined rating for all foods eaten in a single day is positive.
If you want to restrict your caloric intake without feeling hungry, find foods highest in any vitamin or mineral or lowest in carbs, saturated fats, or sugars. Our general state of health is partially driven by the types of foods we consume.
To make vegetable oils suitable for deep frying, the oils are hydrogenated, so trans fats are commonly found in deep-fried foods such as French fries and doughnuts. Trans fats, beyond a limit, are not good for our health.
Hydrogenation solidifies liquid oils and increases the shelf life and the flavor stability of oils and foods that contain them. Other sources of trans fats are vegetable shortenings, some margarines, crackers, cookies, snack foods, and other foods.
Since trans fats increase a products shelf life, many pre-prepared foods and mixes (for example, some pancake mixes and pizza dough) contain trans fats.
The solution: Whenever possible, eat whole, fresh, and unprocessed foods. When buying packaged foods, put in at least as much time into reading labels and selecting products as you do when choosing a shower gel or shampoo.
A good diet is central to overall good health, but which are the best foods to include in your meals, and which ones are best avoided.
Fast food has become much more popular of late and all over the world the outcry regarding harms of fast foods is on increase.
Be aware that there is little scientific information about the effect of so-called functional foods --foods to which vitamins, minerals, herbs, or other dietary substances are added -- despite their growing popularity in the market place and claims of beneficial effects.
Some common foods, including nuts, wheat gluten, dairy products, fish, shrimp, soy, bananas and eggs may trigger allergic reactions.
Fat
Fats add taste to meals and give one a feeling of fullness when eaten. When you choose healthy foods instead of sugary or high-fat foods you can actually improve your health by adding extra phytochemicals and fiber.
Breakfast foods should be healthy but they have a tendency to be high in fats and sugar. The human brain is almost entirely composed of unsaturated fatty acids.
You deprive yourself of more than fats when you go for the fat-free or low-fat salad dressing. We need fats to absorb all the beneficial elements of salads and other fruits and vegetables. Learn which are the right types of fats, to create beautiful, supple skin, and a healthy body.
Eating more whole foods is a good way to replace many of the processed snacks and foods that have a lot of extra sugar, fat (including trans fat), salt, and other things added to them and a lot of good things taken out, like fiber. In addition to food labeled fat-free and low fat, healthy low fat foods include most fruits and vegetables.
Carbohydrates, proteins, and fats (called macronutrients) are broken down (metabolized) to give the body energy.
For example, lowering fat and cholesterol intake and adding whole grains to the diet can prevent atherosclerosis (plaque buildup in the arteries), which can lead to heart disease or stroke.
Fish is high in omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential components of cells and can protect the heart from, for example, fatal arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythm). Omega-3 fatty acids found in cold water fish (such as herring, tuna, and salmon) have been reported to reduce inflammation and help prevent certain chronic diseases, such as heart disease, cancer, and arthritis.
Safe food and good nutrition are important to all. Basic nutrition knowledge is constantly taking shape every day, producing new diet trends to an ever growing audience of people who want to know the latest and greatest ways to achieve their physical fitness goals.
Did you know that you can drastically decrease your chance of heart disease and cancer by eating a healthy diet and following the recommended nutrition guidelines?
Proper nutrition is a powerful good: people who are well nourished are more likely to be healthy, productive and able to learn.
Good nutrition benefits families, their communities and the world as a whole. Malnutrition is, by the same logic, devastating.

Put Power Behind Your Nutritional Information

By     Expert Author Rudy Silva

Nutrition information and natural remedies are now being used by a large population in the United States and throughout the world. People are looking for alternative ways to create health or recover from long standing illnesses. Drugs have been applied for around a hundred years and we all know that they are good for emergencies and for short term use to get past health dangers.
If you are sick or have certain body conditions that are creating pain, then consider learning enough nutrition information that will help you eliminate that sickness or pain. Learning the basic principles of nutrition is not hard, but it does take a little effort in finding the right nutritional course that teaches practical ways of applying nutrition.
Nutrition is actually a science, which can get quite complex in theory. Nutrition information is concerned with the chemical make up of food, how this food is digested, how it is absorbed and used by your body. It is all about how it is used to promote health, and how it is used to prevent and eliminated illness.
Applying practical nutrition stops the beginning of inflammation. This prevents the formation of disease. If disease is developing or well established, nutrition can reverse these conditions. But it can only do this if not to much tissue or cells in that area have not been destroyed.
Inflammation comes from excess acid in your body. This acid is created from the foods you eat. Eating certain foods leave an acid residue in your cells that then travels into the liquid surrounding your cells - lymph liquid. In the lymph liquid, this acid can damage the surrounding cells and tissue and in doing so starts the inflammation process.
Many scientists and medical researchers have uncovered the basic principles of the acid-alkaline body. Maintaining an acid body, which many people have, is what creates and maintains various deadly diseases. Most pathogens like an acid body. Cancer thrives in an acid body.
Nutrition gives you the information you need to know on how to maintain an alkaline body. It gives you the information on what foods are acid and alkaline. Eating the right foods is how you maintain your health. But, nutrition information goes further in explaining how your body uses the foods you eat and how your entire body functions with this good food.
Nutrition says your body is bioelectrical. Your body is run by electrical and chemical reactions. You need to discover what foods support these electrical and chemical activities. Without the right electrical activities in your body, your cells will not get the right nutrition, which is necessary for your survival. Nutrition is also about discovering what food, nutrients and minerals your body needs and what illness you develop if you don't get them.
Learning natural nutrition information is now possible online. In the past it was difficult to learn nutrition without going to school. Finding courses in practical nutrition can be difficult but what you and most people need is to learn is nutrition that you can put into practice. Find the time, find the course, and find the health that you need with the right nutrition course.
Right Now, you can get Free our first lesson in the new eight month nutrition information course that we have created for you. Do you want to discover a new level of nutrition that is now available online? This level will help you stop and recover from illness and help you prevent illness and disease. These weekly lessons provide you with practical help and provide some in depth nutrition ideas. A Chocolate A Day Can Keep You Healthy

By

It is widely believed that eating dark chocolate is good for cardiovascular health. Some health and lifestyle experts, however, emphasized that there is no evidence for this fact. Recently, the British Journal of Nutrition published a new study, which supports regular consumption of chocolate. Before changing your diet to eat more chocolate and sweets, you should understand that this study is published based on clinical observation and available data.
According to the new study, the researchers from Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH), university of South Australia, university of Warwick Medical School and university of Maine suggested that consuming a small amount of chocolate every day can help to prevent insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. The study considered the data of 1,153 people between the ages 18 and 69. When comparing the health of various participants, the research group found lower insulin resistance and healthy liver enzymes in those who claimed that they ate around 100g of chocolate every day. Insulin resistance is one of the very important factors determining the onset of cardiovascular diseases.
The academic researchers proposed the hypothesis that chocolate can be useful for insulin sensitivity and liver enzymes. This study is conducted rigorously, noting down the lifestyle and diet preferences of the participants. The consumption of tea and coffee is also monitored. Both tea and coffee contain polyphenol which is useful to accelerate cardiometabolic effects of chocolate.
The visiting academic at the University of Warwick Medical School, and Scientific Director of department of population health at LIH, Prof Saverio Stranges said that cocoa based products can be suggested as dietary recommendation to improve cardio health and metabolism. However, he added that the results are simply observatory and more robust evidence based trials are required. He also emphasized that natural cocoa product is entirely different from highly processed commercial chocolates.
Among those who participated in the study, 80% of the individuals said that they eat at least 24.8g of chocolate every day. These people were active, young and had higher educational status compared to those who did not eat chocolate regularly. The principal investigator of the study, Dr. Ala's Alkerwi said that the people who consumed chocolate had significant socio-demographic profiles, better health access and healthy lifestyle habits. This can also be an important contributor for the reaction of the body to insulin and liver biomarkers.
Researchers have agreed that randomized control studies and additional observational research are required to truly understand how chocolate is useful in reducing insulin resistance and preventing disorders related to cardiometabolism.
