Is Alkaline Water Extra Healthy Or Just A Hoax?

By

Alkaline water is selling incredibly well. Its sales jumped from $47 million in 2014 to a whopping $427 million in 2017. Marketers claim that alkaline water can energize and detoxify the body, and lead to superior hydration. Not only that, it can also correct acidity in your tissues, which can then prevent or reverse cancer, arthritis, osteoporosis, and other degenerative diseases.
Regrettably, there is virtually no rigorous scientific evidence that can back up such health claims. As a matter of fact, it may be harmful to drink this water on a regular basis. The following explains what alkaline water is and why it is impossible to achieve what marketers claim it can do in the body.
What Is Alkaline Water?
The concept of acidity or alkalinity of the body or of water is based on the pH scale. The pH scale goes from 0 to 14 and a pH of 7 is neutral. Anything with a pH below 7 is considered acidic and anything with a pH above 7 is alkaline.
The acronym "pH" is short for "potential of hydrogen". pH is a measure of the concentration of hydrogen ions. The lower the pH, the more free hydrogen ions it has. The higher the pH, the fewer free hydrogen ions it has. One pH unit reflects a tenfold change in ion concentration, so there are 10 times as many hydrogen ions available at a pH of 7 than at a pH of 8.
Our blood is slightly alkaline, with a pH of 7.4. Pure water has a neutral pH of 7, while natural water ranges from around 6.5 to 8.5 depending on surrounding soil and vegetation, seasonal variations, and weather.
Bottled waters marketed as being alkaline typically claim to have a pH between 8 and 10. Some are from springs or artesian wells that are naturally alkaline because of dissolved alkalizing compounds such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, silica, and bicarbonate. Others are transformed by a process called electrolysis that separates the water into alkaline and acid fractions. There are also expensive water ionizing machines marketed for home use.
Origin Of The Alkaline Diet
The marketing claims behind alkaline water are based on an old idea called the acid-ash hypothesis. It says that eating certain acidic foods like meats, dairy, and eggs results in something called acid ash in the body, which increases your acid levels and causes adverse health effects.
In 2002, an alternative medicine practitioner called Robert O. Young turned the acid-ash hypothesis into a fad alkaline diet with a popular series of books called the pH Miracle. According to his books, an alkaline diet could treat all sorts of illnesses, from poor digestion to cancer. So far, no rigorous research studies have been able to back up the health claims behind the alkaline diet. In 2017, Young was sentenced to three years in jail for practicing medicine without a license.
Why Alkaline Water Cannot Turn The Body Alkaline
Marketers claim that their special water can turn the body alkaline. The truth is that they do not even understand the basic chemistry of how the human body works!
The main reason why drinking alkaline water cannot produce the health benefits claimed by the marketers is because one simply cannot alter the pH of the blood or the body this way.
Our diet, including the water we drink and the medications and supplements we take, can only alter the pH of our urine. Home test kits to measure the pH of urine do not relay any information about the body's pH at all.
The lungs and kidneys are the organs that regulate the body's pH, which is always kept in a very narrow range because all our enzymes are designed to work at pH 7.4. Even a small fluctuation, as little as 0.05 in our blood, can become life-threatening. That is why patients with kidney disease and lung dysfunction often rely on dialysis machines and mechanical ventilators respectively to avoid even a small disruption of pH balance in the blood.
In the stomach, where stomach acid is secreted, the pH is 1.5 to 3.5. It is a very acidic environment because the acid is necessary to break down the food and to kill all the germs and bacteria that may be in our food.
When we drink alkaline water and it comes in contact with the very acidic stomach, it is immediately neutralized because alkaline water has no buffers. A buffer is a chemical that can react with small amounts of either acid or alkaline substance to prevent changes in pH. An example of an alkaline buffer is baking soda (or sodium bicarbonate). Our lungs use bicarbonate as a pH-stabilizing buffer to maintain a constant blood pH.
Marketers claim that as the stomach acid neutralizes the alkaline water, bicarbonate ions are released into the blood, resulting in an alkalizing effect. This could only be true if the alkaline water effectively neutralized all the stomach acid, like baking soda would have done. But in reality, it is impossible for alkaline water to neutralize any significant quantity of stomach acid to create this "net alkalizing effect". As it happens, it is the other way around, the stomach acid completely neutralizes the alkaline water!
Alkaline Foods And Cancer
Proponents of an alkaline diet and marketers of alkaline water believe that overly acidic diets cause the body to become too acidic, which increases your risk of cancer. Although it is true that the immediate environment around cancer cells can be acidic, do know that it is due to differences in the way tumors create energy and use oxygen as compared to healthy tissues, not the acidic foods (such as meats, dairy, and eggs) that you eat.
Similarly, understand that their proposed answer to increase your intake of healthier alkaline foods like vegetables, fruits, and alkaline water can do nothing to change your body's pH. Veggies are good for you but for a different reason - they are high in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants which are anti-inflammatory and cancer-protective.
Alkaline Water For Detoxification And Hydration
Initial health improvements reported by people who drink this type of water can be attributed to the simple fact that they are drinking more water, resulting in improved hydration and detoxification. There is the placebo effect as well.
Moreover, alkaline water may contain higher mineral concentration, which is known to have beneficial health effects, especially when one's diet consists of mainly processed or junk foods that are very low in nutrients.
Final Word
Keep in mind that drinking too much highly alkaline water on a regular basis may not be a good thing. It may lower the stomach pH and compromise digestion. For people who already have insufficient stomach acid production, it may even allow bacteria or other harmful organisms to survive.
For individuals who have a kidney condition or are taking medication that alters their kidney function, the minerals in alkaline water can start to accumulate in their bodies.
However, if you are suffering from acid reflux, the alkalinity may give you some degree of short-term relief the same way TUMS or other antacids that contain alkaline ions will do though neither addresses the root cause of your problem.
In short, do not buy alkaline water as you will be wasting your money. It cannot make you healthier, just your wallet lighter. If you want to drink alkaline water, simply add some baking soda! People who market alkaline water are no different from the snake oil salesmen of yesteryear!

10 Super Foods for Baby Boomers Over 50

By   |   Expert Author Julie Gorges

Eating healthy is important at any age but becomes especially crucial for baby boomers over 50. Why?
Okay, the bad news first. As we get older, our bodies go through some major changes, as nutritional expert Tara Collingwood M.S., RDN points out in an interview for Newsmax. "Men and women alike are susceptible to bone loss, muscle loss, hormonal changes, and the dreaded middle age spread," the dietitian explains. "We see and feel these changes in our achy joints, vision impairment, heart complications, weight gain, decreased memory retention, and lack of energy - all of which are tied directly to nutrition."
The good news? Eating the right foods can help prevent diseases, maintain a healthy metabolism, and help you look and feel good.
Win-win!
With that in mind, here are 10 super foods that boast a high nutrient-to-calorie ratio to keep your body performing optimally. You'll notice that some of these age-defying and disease-fighting super foods are items that you may already love and are sitting inside your refrigerator or pantry.
#1 Wild Salmon
The American Heart Association recommends eating fish two times a week, particularly fatty fish like salmon. Salmon is packed with vitamin D, potassium, B vitamins, and other important minerals, but that's not all. Fatty fish are high in omega-3 fatty acids, which helps fight inflammation, removes triglycerides from the blood, benefits arthritis, and may even help with memory loss and dementia. (By the way, omega-3 can also be found in other fatty, cold-water fish like herring, sardines, rainbow trout, cod, tuna, and mackerel.)
In addition, salmon is a complete protein, meaning it contains all of the essential amino acids. This is important since protein is what our bodies use for maintenance and repair. No wonder experts often put salmon at the top of their list of healthy foods that promote good health!
#2 Chia Seeds
Chia seeds are nutritional, energy-boosting dynamos and the richest source of plant-based omega-3 fatty acids available. The seeds are full of antioxidants, protein, minerals, plus soluble and insoluble fiber to help digestion.
The tiny seeds are also a "complete protein" containing all nine essential amino acids, rare for a plant-based source of protein. Another benefit? These little seeds have an unusual quality - when combined with liquid they swell and absorb more than 10 times their weight. That means adding a spoonful or two to meals will help you feel fuller while adding some crunch and texture. If you're trying to lose a few pounds, this can be helpful!
So here are a few fun facts about this super food. Although chia seeds have only become a popular health food recently, they've been around a long time as a staple of Mayan and Aztec diets. In fact, "chia" means "strength" in the Mayan language. Aztec warriors were known to use the seeds to give them high energy and endurance, especially during battles. And in case you're wondering, these seeds are the same ones used for the iconic Ch-Ch-Ch-Chia Pets that allow you to "grow" garden animals and characters. However, the seeds in these kits aren't approved for consumption, so head to a grocery or drugstore to enjoy the health benefits.
These nutritious seeds are virtually tasteless, so you can add them to just about anything including oatmeal, yogurt, smoothies, sauces, breakfast cereals, soups, and salads. Another popular way to eat the seeds is by making "chia pudding." Just mix some seeds with one cup of liquid like almond milk. After 15 minutes or so, the seeds "swell" and the "pudding" is ready to eat. Add some fruit, nuts, or other toppings for extra flavor. Just be careful about eating spoonfuls of the seeds by themselves which could pose a choking hazard.
#3 Avocados
This unique and nutritious fruit has 20 different vitamins and minerals along with antioxidants including carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin which are valuable for eye health. Surprisingly, avocados have more potassium than bananas - an essential mineral that most older adults don't get enough of that helps reduce blood pressure.
Other bonuses: Avocados contain monounsaturated fatty acids, which numerous studies have shown can help lower levels of 'bad' LDL cholesterol while boosting 'good' HDL cholesterol. These fruits are also high in omega-3 fatty acids which, as previously mentioned, help remove triglycerides from the blood and lower inflammation.
#4 Blueberries/Blackberries
These small berries are full of nutrients including vitamins, potassium, minerals and antioxidants. Blueberries and blackberries contain high levels of soluble fiber which is beneficial for maintaining a healthy weight, lowering cholesterol, maintaining healthy blood sugar levels, and lowering blood pressure.
The berries rank the highest of any fruit for antioxidants including concentrated levels of flavonoids, a natural brain booster that helps reduce age-related declines in motor skills and cognitive ability.
When selecting berries, note that the darker they are, the more antioxidants they have. These fruits are also anti-inflammatory. The good news is that frozen are just as good as fresh and easy to toss on your morning cereal or salad.
#5 Almonds.
Nuts in general are good for our bodies, but almonds are the most nutrient-dense nut, ranking highest in protein, calcium, vitamin E (which helps skin stay supple), magnesium, and folate. Almonds are also high in manganese and copper which are necessary to form collagen and can help aging bodies look and feel younger.
An added bonus: Dieters who ate almonds daily shed 62 percent more weight and 56 percent more fat than those who didn't, a study from Loma Linda University in California found. "The fiber in nuts may prevent your body from absorbing some fat, speeding weight loss," says lead author Michelle Wien, R.D. Almond eaters also lowered their blood pressure, the study noted.
#6 Ginger
Ginger may be best known for its ability to soothe stomach aches and ease nausea. But it has so much more to offer.
This anti-aging herb is a good source of many nutrients, including potassium, magnesium, copper, manganese, and vitamin B6; however, the majority of its benefits for anti-aging nutrition come from its special phytonutrients called gingerols. As WebMD points out: "When you eat or drink phytonutrients, they may help prevent disease and keep your body working properly." Healthline adds: "Gingerol is the main bioactive compound in ginger, responsible for much of its medicinal properties. It has powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects."
By the way, other herbs such as garlic and turmeric also contain anti-inflammatory properties that help relieve achy joints and stiff muscles.
#7 Matcha Green Tea
Matcha comes from the same plant as green tea, but since it's made from the entire leaf, it packs in a more concentrated amount of antioxidants and beneficial plant compounds.
The good news is that these powerful properties can help us baby boomers as we age. What makes matcha such a super food? Its key component is EGCG, a catechin linked to lowering risks to cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and liver disease. Loaded with antioxidants, matcha is known for its immunity-boosting and disease-fighting properties. According to Healthline.com, "Including matcha in your diet could increase your antioxidant intake, which may help prevent cell damage and even lower your risk of several chronic diseases."
EGCG is also linked to potential weight loss benefits. Matcha can crank up your metabolism, helping you burn more calories every day and process food more effectively. In fact, researchers conducted a series of studies on dieters and found that those who drank green tea lost more weight than those who didn't drink it.
The amino acid L-theanine in matcha, which stimulates the production of dopamine and serotonin helps improve concentration and memory. According to a study published in the journal Phytomedicine, regular consumption of green tea may even offer protection against Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia.
An added benefit: Unlike coffee, the amino acids in Matcha help your body absorb the caffeine gradually which releases energy slowly and sustainably. Matcha promises a four to six hour energy boost that's just enough to perk you up.
Janie Zeitlin, a registered dietitian in White Plains, NY and New York City, says matcha is a "nutritional powerhouse," and "a valuable addition to any diet," but adds that moderation is best because of the potency. Most experts recommend drinking a cup or two a day.
#8 Beans
Experts recommend adults consume three cups of beans per week to promote health and reduce the risk of chronic diseases. With good reason.
This often overlooked super food is considered "heart healthy" since beans contain an abundance of soluble fiber, which can lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Beans also deliver a powerful combination of vitamins and minerals, including blood-pressure-regulating magnesium, energizing iron, bone-strengthening calcium, potassium, and folate as well as antioxidants. Keep in mind, the darker the bean, the higher its antioxidant levels.
As a bonus, beans help raise levels of the hormone leptin which curbs appetite and thus can help you maintain a healthy weight. Beans are also metabolized more slowly than other complex carbs, helping you feel fuller longer while delivering a great source of energy throughout the day.
A comparatively inexpensive source of protein, beans can be purchased canned, frozen, or dried. To increase your intake, incorporate beans into main dishes like chile or soup, use as a filling side-dish instead of bread or potatoes, toss into a salad, or eat snacks like roasted chick peas or hummus. Have a variety of beans including kidney beans, pinto beans, black beans, lima beans, black-eyed peas, garbanzo beans (chickpeas), split peas, fava beans, and lentils in your pantry and get creative!
#9 Quinoa
The South American grain quinoa is well-known to vegans and vegetarians because it's a complete protein and filled with antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, such as B2, magnesium, copper, iron, and phosphorus.
Quinoa is easy to use in place of other grains, pastas, or white rice. An excellent source of protein with sufficient amounts of all the essential amino acids, it packs more nutrition than most grains.
In addition, quinoa contains large amounts of flavonoids, including quercetin and kaempferol. These are potent antioxidants with several health benefits.
#10 Dark Chocolate
Okay, I saved the best for last. Who doesn't love chocolate? Just so happens that quality dark chocolate is rich in fiber, iron, magnesium, copper, manganese and a few other minerals.
Dark chocolate also contains organic compounds that function as antioxidants, including polyphenols, flavanols, and catechins. Some studies indicate that consuming small amounts of dark chocolate on a regular basis can lower blood pressure and decrease the rate of stroke in women by 20 percent.
The darker the chocolate, the lower the fat and sugar content. However, don't go too crazy. Unfortunately, there are 170 calories in one piece (one ounce) of dark chocolate and the treat does contain sugar along with all those nutrients, so should be eaten in moderation. Still, I love that dark chocolate can be counted as a health food, don't you?

Is It Possible to Stay Healthy in This Day and Age?

By    Expert Author Stana Peete

We are surrounded by café's and fast food restaurants that offer us a variety of tasty meals that are prepared really quickly. But with that come the added fats, salts, and sugars to give the meal its overwhelmingly delicious flavours. Burgers are doused with sauces, drinks are saturated with sugar, and chips are overly salted. With such delicious yet bad food options available to us, is it possible to stay healthy in this day and age?
For some it may be a challenge because there are more unhealthy options available than healthy ones. Around every corner there is a burger place or a pizza parlour. Each one offering quick service and a number of fatty food options on their menu. It's not a bad thing to have fast food on occasion such as once a week or fortnightly. It is when you overdo it and eat it daily that has a big impact on your health. After all, your body is not made of processed foods. Your body is a natural being that requires natural fuel to survive and thrive. That means it requires fruit, vegetables, proteins and minerals as fuel. Processed foods tend to work against your body. It also makes your digestive system work harder to break down the processed ingredients.
Processed food costs remarkably less than healthier food which is, not surprising, why many people choose fast food. You get more meal for your buck and for people who live on a tight budget this might be the only type of food that they can afford. It is ironic because you would think that the natural option would cost less and the processed option, which is man-made, would cost more. However, the opposite is true and this results in an unhealthier nation because it is price that is considered over health.
There are ways to stay healthy and save money, but that means you might need to do it yourself. For example, you could invest in catering equipment that makes healthy options. You could get your own juice extractor and make 100% fruit juice in your own home. Or you could look for a blender that can blend fruit to make delicious smoothies. You could make a batch of smoothies and freeze it. Each day you can take one cup out of the fridge and take it with you to work. It is a great alternative to the sugary gas drinks plus it is filled with vitamins.
If you take the time and thought, you can live healthily in this day and age.

Food Choices Vs. Nutritional Sabotage

By   |   Expert Author Shira Litwack
Nutritional Sabotage? what do I mean?
Are our healthy clean eating diets helping us, or are they creatine nutritional mayhem. Let's talk about a few examples.
No carb: the Go To diet for a very long time.
A few points.
The Moderation study: Dr Sara Seidelmann, clinical and research fellow in cardiovascular medicine from Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, led the research. The study of more than 15,400 people in the US found that diets both low and high in carbohydrates were linked with an increase in mortality, while moderate consumers had the lowest risk of mortality.
These findings were confirmed in a meta-analysis of studies ( study of hundreds of other studies combined) including over 432,000 people from more than 20 countries. Bottom line results:
Average life expectancies for 50-year-olds:
Moderate carbohydrate intake - additional 33 years
Very low carbohydrate intake- 29 years
High carbohydrate intake - 32 years
Nutritional sabotage? an excellent example here. The millions of people who do not eat carbs for instant gratification of weight loss - these studies seem to confirm nutritional sabotage, albeit the very best intentions.
Again - we have to define a carb - of course we are not referring to and excuse for pizza & pasta parties, chips, junk food. That's another form of nutritional sabotage. When we say carbs - we are referring to fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes & beans...
Brain food: Our brains consume up to 20% of the energy used by the entire human body, more than any other organ. The brain is about 2% of body weight, but receives 15% of the cardiac output and uses 20% of the total body oxygen consumption. Rather needy organ! The brain uses about 25% of the total body glucose (from carbs) utilization. Junk carbs are terrible for the brain in a number of ways (oxidative stress and inflammation), yet those good carbs we are talking about are vital. The body can use ketones (from a deprivation of good carbs) as an energy source... let's just say not a preferred source, another full topic unto itself.
Dairy: Another popular belief is to eliminate dairy. Truthfully, I was devastated when Canada removed dairy from the food guide. I am all for getting people to eat more legumes, plant based foods. Fact is like other foods, moderation is key. Dairy is still an excellent source of calcium, vitamin D, protein, micronutrients... supports bone growth, hormone production, a very long list. I do not think it is realistic for children to eat enough legumes, oily fish to compensate. Dairy is also, according to numerous studies, to have a role in diabetes prevention. Once again - we are saying moderation - and we are not talking bowls and bowls of sugary fatty ice cream, 18% cream in our coffee... But a bowl of greek yogurt has endless nutritional benefits - including a natural food source of probiotics (mix in some oatmeal for the prebiotics), protein and precious enzymes, coenzymes and micronutrients. And please, don't fool yourself about giving your kids calcium from those chocolate spreads...
There are benefits to being a vegetarian - if people are doing it properly - and not living on a diet of pasta and potatoes. Are they eating fish, nuts, seeds, legumes, fruits & vegetables? With many people - being vegetarian is nutritional sabotage, they frequently are low in B12, calcium and the iron in vegan foods is not as easily absorbed by the body as the iron from animal sources - there is a real skill necessary for a healthy vegan or vegetarian diet. However, eliminating all animal products from the diet increases the risk of certain nutritional deficiencies. From the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition: "Micronutrients of special concern for the vegan include vitamins B-12 and D, calcium, and long-chain n-3 (omega-3) fatty acids. Unless vegans regularly consume foods that are fortified with these nutrients, appropriate supplements should be consumed. In some cases, iron and zinc status of vegans may also be of concern because of the limited bioavailability of these minerals."
I recently did an interview with Dr. Ross Grant, on the importance of NAD to lower oxidative stress, which can lead to chronic inflammation, in our diets, NAD is a coenzyme our bodies can assemble. However, we need to assure our body is getting the precursors it needs to manufacture the NAD: Yeast, niacin, Nicotinamide Riboside (NR) from cow's milk, fish, chicken... what happens if we eliminate certain food groups?
Points to ponder... its not just about popping a multivitamin for vitamins and minerals that might be missing in our diets. I would hate to see children depending on Flintstone vitamins more than a respect for a healthy diet. There are hundreds of more examples here. Our bodies are a symphony of chemical reactions, fuelled by enzymes and coenzymes we need to assemble. Food and exercise are our very best medicines. Exercise needs to be efficiently fueled too. Don't just look at the immediate results - look at the longer picture of health. Make sure your best intentions are not nutritional sabotage, depriving yourself of health.

Why The Fear of Dietary Fats Is Unnecessary

By   |
For several years many of us have been led to think that consuming a low-fat diet equates to leanness and even health. Our scientists, the government, doctors, nutritionists and also the media have made us all assume that any time we eat fat, it gets converted right into fat in the body.
The most awful of the recommendations is that eating fat does so much harm as to clog our arteries.
Time has flown by and now we know that none of this has any specific clinical truth supporting them. They are basically not clinically correct. This formerly held idea had been based upon defective science and neglects persuading proof to the contrary.
This unnecessary fear of dietary fat has created a very massive worldwide health epidemic.
This entire dilemma began when the governing administration recommended the Food Guide Pyramid. The pyramid placed carbs at the bottom and we were advised to base our eating plans around it.
Then again, oils and fats were set at the last part of this pyramid with the suggestion that they should be used cautiously. The medical care companies and also the food businesses hopped on board and the remainder is history.
Today, approximately 20 percent of the standard North American daily calorie intake is from sugar-sweetened beverages such as sweetened teas and coffees, energy drinks, sodas, and fruit juices.
And herein lays the most significant issue. These types of liquefied sugar calories are generally a lot more harmful than solid sugars or other carb calories. This owes to the fact that they are "simple" in structure, are easily absorbed into the blood, and consequently used directly for fat creation and storage.
In addition, sugar-sweetened drinks have been shown to cause heart disease, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cancer.
Several scientific studies have made it unambiguously known that refined carbohydrates and sugars are the true causes of unhealthy weight and cardiovascular diseases - and definitely not dietary fat as previously suggested.
It is a well-known truth that too much carbohydrate ingestion results in an increase in the manufacturing of insulin which usually makes your body to retain body fat mainly in harmful places like the abdomen.
It is also one other clearly agreed upon fact that sugars and refined carbohydrates in our meals are the principal reason for the sheer surge in the occurrence of type 2 diabetes and also pre-diabetes.
Unlike sugar, which irrespective of the label or variety have unfavorable effect on the body, there are actually different types of dietary fats having varied impacts on the body. For sugars, its impact is direct while for dietary fats it is dependent upon the kind that is eaten.
Effectively, not all fats are exactly the same. They don't all have the same influence on the human body. A lot of them can adversely impact your health while many others are really critical for the correct working of the body.
As a consequence of this, we have the polyunsaturated, monounsaturated, trans fats, and saturated types of dietary fats. In addition, within all of these groupings you can still have varied types. For example, saturated fats and polyunsaturated fats come in several tastes.
Therefore, it's important to realize that not all dietary fats ought to be criticized. Ingesting the right portions of the good types will certainly not make you fat.
The shroud covering the real facts concerning the eating of dietary fats is progressively getting removed and the discoveries are becoming very fascinating.
There are actually irrefutable proof currently proving that eating the proper dietary fats help you not just to shed extra pounds but likewise assist to guard against heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. Other gains of nutritious fat ingestion include improved state of mind, nails, skin, and hair.
The take home note in this article is that consuming the right quantities of the good dietary fats is the solution to proper well-being and fat reduction. Consequently, consuming these types of fats do not make you gain weight and causes no heart associated health conditions.
